Some thought the record transfer fee of £10,890 was obscene; others thought the 29-year-old was past his best. Not for the first or last time, Chapman was proved right. Jack went on to play a major role in Arsenal's domination of the 1930s under Chapman and then George Allison. No wonder Chapman later described him as "one of the best bargains I ever made". Jack was an instant hit at Highbury, finishing his first campaign as the Club's top scorer with 25 goals in 31 games. The title was beyond Arsenal that season and the next, but Chapman kept his promise to deliver a major trophy with the 1930 FA Cup. Jack, who scored the first ever goal at Wembley Stadium when he represented Bolton in the 1923 Final, became the first player to win the Cup at Wembley with two different clubs as Huddersfield were beaten 2-0 seven years later. In Chapman's W-M formation Jack was deployed as a forward alongside the likes of Jack Lambert and Cliff Bastin. As Arsenal grew in stature, the goals flowed. Jack registered his best tally in 1930/31, netting 34 times as Arsenal won their first League title. Jack collected two more championship medals in 1932/33 and 1933/34, although his own influence had waned as the years caught up with him. Jack retired in May 1934 after scoring 124 goals in 208 matches for Arsenal. He won eight England caps during his career, scoring three times. Jack immediately turned to management after hanging up his boots, taking charge of Southend for six years before stints at Middlesbrough and Shelbourne. He died in 1958, aged 59.

Alex James was a star of his time and a pivotal figure in Arsenal's domination of the 1930s. Famed for his baggy shorts, James opened the scoring in the 1930 FA Cup final to set Arsenal on their way to a first major trophy. He left after another FA Cup win in 1936 and also racked up four titles during his time at Highbury. The Bergkamp comparisons are understandable. James played as an inside forward, providing the ammunition for the likes of Cliff Bastin, Ted Drake and David Jack to fill their boots. The Scot's impeccable passing made him the perfect supply line for Herbert Chapman's prolific Arsenal sides. James left Preston to join Chapman's revolution in 1929, making his debut against Leeds United on August 31 of that year. His first season was unspectacular - James spent much of it recovering from injury - but he was fit in time to play a leading role in the 1930 FA Cup Final. James was not known for his goalscoring, plundering only 27 in 261 appearances for the Club, but he was on target at Wembley. The Scot's strike set up a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town as Arsenal clinched their first major silverware. Even better was to follow as James inspired Arsenal to their maiden League title in 1931. His influence was underlined by events the following year: an injury sidelined James for a large chunk of the season and Arsenal had to settle for the runners-up spot in the League and the FA Cup. James was back to help Arsenal win a hat-trick of titles between 1933 and 1935. The Scottish assist machine helped the Gunners plunder a club record of 118 League goals in 1933 and, two years later, James was largely responsible for Ted Drake's impressive haul of 42. James captained Arsenal to another FA Cup triumph in 1936 with a 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Wembley. Then, as age and injuries took their toll, he called time on his playing career in the summer of 1937. James was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2005 in recognition of his contribution to the English game. Arsenal were lucky enough to be the main beneficiaries of the Scot's wizardry.

By the time he left North London five years later, he had added two Premier League titles and two FA Cup medals. But it wasn’t always plain-sailing for the Nigerian striker. In 1996, after leading his nation to Olympic glory in Atlanta, Kanu underwent a medical examination at Inter Milan — he had moved to the Italian giants from Dutch outfit Ajax Amsterdam with whom he won the Champions League — and the result was harrowing. It was revealed that the marksman was suffering a serious heart defect, and in November of that year Kanu had surgery to replace an aortic valve. Far from let the adversity get him down, Kanu used his experience, and already escalating fame in Africa, to set up the Kanu Heart Foundation, an organisation that helps predominantly young people on the continent. His philanthropic work is just an example of his human touch. Kanu’s touch was equally good on the football pitch. He joined the Gunners in the wake of Nicolas Anelka’s departure to Real Madrid and, at first, failed to woo the crowd with his languid demeanour around the pitch. Soon, though, Kanu’s attributes became apparent and the cheeky smile he carried with him throughout won over the Highbury faithful. Kanu could operate both as a target man or as a deep-sitting conductor of play. He had the ability to bamboozle defenders in the blink of an eye, using superb close control to wriggle out of tight spots. He was often the scorer of great goals, too. His delicious flick-of-the heel goal in a 6-1 rout against Middlesbrough springs straight to mind, as does the time in a North London derby when he scooped the ball over a despairing Luke Young before emphatically burying the ball beyond Ian Walker. However the moment Kanu will best be remembered for was the mesmeric finale to a 17-minute hat-trick at Stamford Bridge in 1999. Having already notched twice to haul Arsenal level with Chelsea, the Nigerian sealed victory with one of the finest goals in the history of the Premier League. He won possession by the left by-line and found himself faced with, first, an out of position goalkeeper, then two defenders and a narrowing angle. Ed de Goey was slithered past with a subtle shimmy before Kanu unleashed a curling effort which arrowed into the far top corner. The points were Arsenal’s and a place in the Club’s history was Kanu’s.

It was a pity for Arsenal there weren't more of the indomitable defender. For a while Martin Keown was an unheralded member of George Graham's side as his less than aesthetically pleasing approach to the game typified the Arsenal of the time. However as he progressed a wiser head grew on the broad shoulders of the England international, and Keown developed into one of the most sturdy centre-backs in the domestic top flight. The Oxfordshire native originally spent one season with the Club's first-team in the mid-1980s before, via Aston Villa and Everton, he became the first man since the Second World War to rejoin Arsenal. As a teenager Keown had been lauded as a neat and constructive player seen, in the long-term, as a partner for David O'Leary. The emergence of one Tony Adams put paid to that, but with a newly-acquired versatility picked up elsewhere, he became a vital cog in the Graham machine. Martin was deployed most frequently at centre-half where his formidable pace and thunderous tackling combined to thwart both target men and strikers running in behind. It meant, too, that he was vastly capable in an anchoring midfield role; something utilised by his manager. When Arsène Wenger took the reins in 1996 Keown continued to strive for improvement and, despite his increasing years, he remained as redoubtable as ever. The footballing intellect he had demonstrated in the nascent stages of his career returned while, crucially, his bite and combative nature was unfailing. Major honours had so far eluded Keown - he was cup-tied for the 1993 FA Cup and League Cup success, while injury robbed him of a Cup Winners' Cup medal a year later - but in 1998 when Wenger's men swept away all before them the defender played a pivotal role alongside Adams. But Keown was now the wrong side of 35. Testament to his character, though, he fought back from wear-and-tear injuries as well as a challenge from Matthew Upson to win another 'double' in 2002. Pascal Cygan's arrival that summer failed to curtail Keown's career as he made 24 appearances in 2002/03.
