He was an England regular when he joined Arsenal and helped the Gunners to their first FA Cup win and first League title under Chapman

JAMES One of the finest players to grace a football pitch. Alex James was a star of his time and a pivotal figure in Arsenal's domination of the 1930s. Famed for baggy shorts, James opened the scoring in the 1930 FA Cup final to set Arsenal on their way to a first major trophy. He left after another FA Cup win in 1936 and also racked up four titles during his time at Highbury.

JENNINGS When Jennings made the switch from Spurs to Arsenal in 1977, few expected him to emulate the popularity and success he enjoyed at White Hart Lane. They were wrong. Jennings made 326 appearances for the Gunners, dominating his area with a calm authority. Unspectacular but brave and effective, Jennings helped Arsenal reach four finals and was awarded an OBE in 1987.

After the game, Tom Whittaker insisted that keeper should always wear an unwashed (and hence ungreasy) shirt.
