Henry cheering for Cassano

Thierry Henry and Fernando Torres have named Italy as the favourites for Euro 2004 with Antonio Cassano as the surprise of the tournament.

“I think that Italy will be among the Finalists,” predicted the Frenchman, “and not just because they have an incredible defence.”

“I really like Cassano, because when you see him play he makes you jump in your seat with some of the things he comes out with. He’s so creative and crazy, as if he’s playing with his chums in a courtyard.”

Earlier this week Michel Platini also tipped the Azzurri for glory, but most pundits have pinpointed Francesco Totti as the central figure in this campaign.
“Totti and Zinedine Zidane are phenomenal and we all know that,” concluded Henry, “but Cassano is going to be the real surprise of this tournament.”

There is also support for Giovanni Trapattoni’s side from Spain, despite the long-running rivalry between these two nations.

“It will be difficult for us to win Euro 2004,” commented Atletico Madrid starlet Fernando Torres, “as there are stronger sides. The top of the list goes to Italy, closely followed by France. The Azzurri have the most rounded outfit and they’ll be tough to beat.”

Torres netted against Italy in the recent 1-1 friendly draw at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, the same match that saw Roberto Baggio’s international swansong.

Meanwhile, Italy have climbed one place in this month’s FIFA rankings to enter the top ten ahead of the Czech Republic.

The Azzurri’s Group C opponents are not faring quite as well. Denmark drop down a place to 15th, Sweden climb from 21st to 18th, but Bulgaria fall two spots to 40th.
