Dennis Bergkamp insisted Arsenal have the exciting young talent to dominate the Premiership for many seasons to come - and only wishes he was 10 years younger.
While the Gunners may have to face up to the loss of Patrick Vieira to Real Madrid, their younger players took centre-stage in the Community Shield victory against Manchester United.
Bergkamp remains unsure as to whether such promise can immediately compensate for the possible loss of a world-class player of the class of Vieira.
"When you look at a whole season, you don't want to miss a player like Patrick," he admitted.
"He's very important to us as he's one of the best midfielders in the world now and possibly even one of the best that I've ever seen.
"Of course, you could say that now that we won without him but it's very important for us that he stays.
"We send him flowers every day to tell him! He's not stupid though, he knows what we think of him."
Then again, Spanish duo Cesc Fabregas, 17, and Jose Reyes, 20, look set to make a major impression this season, while Jermaine Pennant, 21, was lively after his return from his loan spell at Leeds.
Indeed, with the likes of Ashley Cole, Kolo Toure, Gael Clichy and Robin van Persie also aged under 24, Bergkamp can appreciate the rich potential coming into the first-team.
"It showed how much quality and talent they have, that they can perform at this level," he said.
"Normally at 17, you might be a bit unsure when you step out. But with players like Cesc, the way he has developed in one year is quite amazing.
"All credit to him, he was flying in there with tackles, it was a part of his game that he has developed.
"Slowly but surely it's becoming a younger team but we're still maintaining the same level."
When asked if Arsenal can dominate the Premiership for years to come, Bergkamp insisted: "Talent and quality-wise, I think we can.
"It's not just the first XI, we've still got other players coming back. It's probably the first 20 or 22 players who can really play at this level."
With experienced figures such as Martin Keown, Ray Parlour, Sylvain Wiltord and Kanu having left the club this summer, that places an even greater onus on the likes of Bergkamp.
The Dutchman, who is now 35, is in his final season at the club but is relishing the chance to play the role of 'father figure'.
"There are also many foreign players coming to the club so I've got that experience too. If they want to talk, then I would give them advice. Most of the time, what the players want to learn from is the way I think about the game and play the game," he said.
"It's tremendous to play in this team. There's so much talent and it's the way that I like to play football.
"Sometimes you say 'I wish that had happened a bit sooner and we could have maybe been even further than we are now'. Yes, you wish that you were 10 years younger.
"But even though you're happy to be part of it and fight for a place this season, you're proud that those players are coming through as it means, as a club, you've done well.
"A lot of them are young and so it's a gamble but the manager has a very good eye. He's done that in the past with players who weren't well known and then they left the club famous."
