我记得在另外一周的一个曾经很有趣的晚上，在Arseblog论坛上，有个人关于“温格足球”这个术语的使用发表了一番激昂而热烈的演讲，我有责任对这一行为作为纠正，直接清楚明白的表明我的观点：我并不这么认为！
但是，如果不分析的话，就“温格足球”这个词汇本身的概念也许还是值得考虑的；在一年前我的确也在某篇文章中使用过这个词语（是的，这一点我承认），说：“我其实并不是真正关心它是否已经死亡”——那是12个月以前的事了。有很多人因此而非常乐意得出结论，任何使用过这一词汇的人基本上没有资格观看足球比赛，因为阿森纳踢球的方式是一个非常简单的概念，它的形成经过了数十年的发展，这很难把它理解成是温格思想的产物。他们也许会认为这种想法非常正确。

You'd expect, on the face of it, the above quote to have been delivered by Mark Lawrenson or Alan Hansen on one of their rare and weird tripped-out realisations that they've been wrong about everything since not winning much with kids. But no – of course, it was the late great Brian Clough, and if such a proponent of ugly, no-frills, defensive minded (yet as effective as anything else) play is prepared to get worked up over the style of football at N5, there's obviously something worth 'trademarking' here. 'Wengerball' was just something that rolls off the tongue easier than 'Arsenal's style of football'.
Knock it all you want for being pretentious, but bear in mind that nobody is doing much beyond salivating over what they're seeing before them. Few people will claim how we play is revolutionary. We attack as a well oiled unit, with overlapping full backs and well-drilled insurance men in the middle of the park to fill in gaps. Everyone is immensely capable on the ball otherwise they wouldn't wear the shirt.
The only 'scrapper' left is Freddie Ljungberg, and to label him just as that is to neglect his pace, runs, and occasional runs of form where he has single handedly carried us over periods of months in the past. Although maybe that's the point?
To be honest, most things that are effective nowadays incorporate all of the traditional ideas that nobody argues over. Personally, I reckon that British music is undergoing something pretty special at the moment, with Delays, 20-20s, Sons and Daughters, Dogs Die In Hot Cars, Zutons, Razorlight and especially Franz Ferdinand, who respectively echo La's style updated psychadelic pop, electric blues, country-punk, XTC, everything ever recorded from the 60's, good old-fashioned rock and roll and the Glasgow indie couldn't-give-a-toss-about-being-on-the-dole attitude respectively. I read a pretty brilliant quote in the paper the other day that 'Take Me Out' is 'Girls and Boys' by Blur updated by ten years, which gives everything a nice new context, given that Girls and Boys was riding the wave of the incoming Britpop at the time.
There's nothing as exciting in the current day Premiership, mind. The majority of the football is to be honest a majorly unsightly experience to behold; the days of the novelty and hysteria of the foreign wave of the mid-90's (see above...) granted still retains a certain kind of faded (seaside-ish?) glamour, but you don't hear anyone ever go on about the Prem being the best in the world any more. Astonishing South American talent is on the up, and they're all off to Italy and Spain. In this less appealing climate, we haven't seen Arsenal's open style of sweeping one-touch for at least two years. Bolton were good at Highbury – and they were good because they rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in. I don't recall that this was what Cantona, Bergkamp, Ginola, Marco Boogers and William Prunier were shipped over to provide. I think I've got some of that right, anyhow.
Clough says it best – it's about retaining posession, slowing the football down and emphasising the option for the pass, another basic factor of the unit. We have round pegs for round holes, and we have never, ever had a Seba Veron, and we never will. As has been stressed before – we're not perfect. We dawdle about in the penalty area, we like to try and walk the ball in, Reyes is still very raw a la early Anelka (but ten times better) and we still need more defensive cover. Wengerball didn't allow for that. It was used to talk about this almighty, all-conquering footballing ethic. Which, as we now tend to grind out results a hell of a lot more than brushing teams aside (the declining technical standard of English football makes for some interesting ways that other teams adopt to try and compensate right enough...), surely makes Wengerball, if used as anything more than a less-than-serious way of talking about Arsenal Football Club a tad outdated.
But then again, who still uses it in that sense anyway? The detractors have a point. They haven't allowed for the possibility that people can be a lot more ironic than they first appear. This was all said a year ago, by the way. It's a wonder anyone still cares enough to make a fuss.
Ahh, good old Wengerball, eh? Annoys the crap out of hundreds of people, appears to have been a defunct term for at least twenty-four months, bears no relation between what people imagine and what they actually get on the park, and yet, and this is the absolutely fundamental and crucial issue – doesn't it just sound better than Fergusball? Which hopefully will bring the matter to a close.
I have a confession to make – this Saturday, for the first time in a number of years I am not making an effort to follow an Arsenal match. I'm off to see Franz Ferdinand in Glasgow. It's always nice to be part of something new and exciting, isn't it?
