The manager chose to swap his keepers after a run of indifferent results but he refuted suggestions the German had done anything wrong. “Jens Lehmann had played 49 games unbeaten,” said Wenger. “He is a fantastic keeper. But you can only be honest with what you feel has to be done. On the pitch we had not much choice as we had many injuries, so sometimes it is not the performance of the player that makes you make this decision. “I made the choice honestly. I am not blaming Jens, it was just a decision. He has not played that badly but Almunia has had great performances in training. He could feel it is unfair on him too. It is a decision and I understand people can have a different view. “But the keeper is a player like any other. Sometimes he has to accept the manager's decision to come out.”
