United defeat ends proud home run
By Andy Verspeak
Last night's reverse at the hands of Manchester United was Arsenal's first home defeat in the Premiership since Leeds won at Highbury back in May 2003.
The champions' phenomenal 32-game unbeaten run at Highbury started with a 6-1 win over Southampton in the final home game of the 2002/03 campaign. Robert Pires and Jermaine Pennant scored at hat-trick apiece that night.
The 2003/04 season saw Arsenal go unbeaten for an entire campaign and notch up a staggering 15 home wins, as well as four draws. Manchester United, Portsmouth, Birmingham and Fulham were the only teams Wenger’s men failed to beat at Highbury.
Highlights of the campaign included 2-1 victories over London rivals Tottenham and Chelsea, a 4-2 win over Liverpool and a 5-0 thrashing of Leeds.
This season has seen Arsenal win a further seven games at Highbury. Last night's defeat ended a run of 32 games and 20 months without losing at home.
