一个曾经患有口吃的男孩从歌声中找回自信，并藉由歌声感动全球乐迷，葛瑞盖斯创造了21世纪的歌声奇迹，自从2002年从英国选秀节目Pop Idol比赛赢得亚军荣衔後，葛瑞盖斯歌声传情的功力开始所向披靡。
他曾经是一个因为严重口吃而几乎念不出自己姓名的男孩，在他的成长过程中可以说是充满了挫折，然而当他唱歌时，他所释放出来的却是一个如此纯净清亮、充满情感，并且足以让人感动落泪的声音。
「我们第一天见到他，就知道我们发现一颗闪亮的明星。他有一种独特的天赋，一听到他的声音，就会让你精神为之一振，想要仔细倾听。而他放在每一句歌词的情感更是令人屏息。」《流行偶像(Pop Idol)》的版权所有人及掌舵者Simon Fuller如此表示。
这一切对於认识葛瑞的人而言一点都不意外，因为葛瑞从小开始便热爱音乐，他不仅是一位优秀的歌者，还擅长演奏多种乐器。他是一位极富造诣的钢琴家、词曲创作者，还会演奏古典吉他、空心吉他、电吉他以及鼓。
与音乐结缘是在8岁那年，而且是在十分意外的情形下发生的。当时他的学校正在筹备一出名为「约瑟夫与神奇绚彩的梦衣（Joseph And The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat）」的儿童舞台剧，葛瑞最初只被安插了一个小角色。「所有的同学都参加了，我以为我会成为一个笑柄，」他说。
於是，歌唱成为葛瑞在人生大海中的救生圈，「有好长一段时间，我都在努力的要以语言来完整地表达自己，後来发现我可以藉由音乐来做到，这就是为什麼当我站在舞台上，会投入这麼多情感的。
