Rotation policy pays dividends for Wenger
Arsène Wenger will continue to rotate his squad as the games come thick and fast for Arsenal in January. Sunday's FA Cup tie at Leeds kicked off a run of seven games in 24 days for the Gunners as they chase domestic honours on three fronts.
Arsenal's strength in depth was questioned after a relatively dormant summer in the transfer market but Wenger's faith in his players has been richly rewarded.
Perhaps the biggest plus has been the emergence of a pool of defensive players which has allowed Wenger to change personnel without affecting performances.
Kolo Toure has been a revelation, excelling in the centre of defence and deputising admirably for Lauren at right-back in recent weeks.
Pascal Cygan has also grown in stature after finding his feet in English football. Gael Clichy, one of a few low-key summer signings, belied his tender years with a string of mature performances at left-back while Ashley Cole was suspended.
With Martin Keown still performing at the top level and Sol Campbell as consistent as ever, Wenger has plenty of options at the back.
He made three changes in that area at Elland Road, replacing Cygan, Toure and Clichy with Keown, Lauren and Cole. As Wenger explains, he picks the players he expects to thrive in any particular game, hence the recall of Keown.
"I knew that against Mark Viduka it would be a physical game and that Leeds would try to play long balls to him," reflects Wenger.
"Also I wanted to rotate the squad a little bit because we have many games in January and I need everybody fit. If I keep players out for too long they cannot play the games because they are not fit enough.
"They need games and that is also why I decided to play Martin."
More changes are likely when Arsenal defend their unbeaten start to the League season at Everton on Wednesday. Toure and Cygan are both fit and will be considered by Wenger when he picks his starting line-up.
"It's a possibility that Pascal will come back for the Everton game," said Wenger. "I can also play Kolo Toure in there. We play three games in six days so I need everybody to be fit."
