Blackburn midfielder David Bentley wishes he had left Arsenal sooner
The 21-year-old, who joined Rovers on a season-long loan from The Gunners on transfer deadline day, is now relishing the opportunity afforded him by Mark Hughes.
Bentley will make a return to London on Saturday when Rovers take on Chelsea but he admits to having cut his capital contacts after seemingly failing to make the grade at Highbury.
"I don't consider myself an Arsenal player anymore even though I am still contracted to them," Bentley told The Mirror.
"And I don't have contact with anyone from Arsenal anymore.
"Arsenal are such a talented team but I never shied away from the challenge of breaking into the team. It just never seemed to happen for me."
Bentley believes his failed breakthrough at Arsenal is indicative of the struggle of many young English players at the country's top clubs.
Consequently, he was only too happy to make the move north, despite, by his own admission, failing to hit top form in his fledgling Rovers career.
"It's difficult nowadays for young English players to make it at a big club and the important thing is to get out early if you see there isn't much hope," he added.
"You have to cut yourself off from the club completely, and I think I left it too late. I should have left earlier.
"Now I just want to get on and play regularly."
