TICKETS for Arsenal’s Boxing Day match against Wolves were being sold for almost £150 by professional ticket agencies.
After dialling the number on the fax, this newspaper was told there were still blocks of tickets available in the North Bank and West Stand for the supposed “sell out” game.
But the seats would cost £146 (£125 plus VAT) each – up to four times the normal price.
Sgt Dave Spooner, football liaison officer at Arsenal, said: “Unfortunately there’s no denying that these agencies are in existence and are breaking the law. You cannot sell match day tickets unless you are authorised by the club.
“But these agencies can also make huge profits by selling tickets as part of hospitality packages to foreign customers. They offer a weekend in London with hotel and match tickets and can add on however much they want and blame it on the hotel prices.
All members of the ticket registration scheme have their names printed on any tickets they buy through the scheme. So it is easy to identify and ban the members involved if the police find black market tickets in the hands of agencies or individual touts.
A club spokesman said: “Earlier this season a raid on an agency in Piccadilly resulted in a large number of tickets and cash being confiscated. The memberships associated with the tickets being distributed from the agency were cancelled and the case against the agency is continuing.
