WENGER PRAISES BENTLEY
Saturday 24th January 2004
Arsene Wenger tipped emerging striker David Bentley to follow in the footsteps of Dennis Bergkamp after he rounded off Arsenal's FA Cup fourth round win against Middlesbrough with a sublime chip.
Arsenal had earlier confirmed their passage into the fifth round, even without Thierry Henry, as makeshift strikeforce Dennis Bergkamp and Freddie Ljungberg rose to the occasion.
However, after Boro had been reduced to ten men by the dismissal of George Boateng, 19-year-old Bentley came off the bench to score his first senior goal and confirm a 4-1 victory with a magical lob over 6ft 4ins keeper Mark Schwarzer.
"Bentley scored a great goal. I believe that he has a bit of the characteristics of Bergkamp, who is his idol," declared the Arsenal boss.
"He has a good role model there and I hope he can follow him, but we have to let him grow and mature. There are movements there of a talented player though.
"If a young boy comes on for five minutes and chips the keeper, you cannot say he lacks confidence.
"He has that in abundance - especially as it was with his left foot as he's a right-footed player.
"I believe he has more of the characteristics of a central, supportive striker rather than a wide player but, when you're young, you play wherever the manager puts you. That's part of growing up."
Ljungberg, who was pushed forward, then struck twice to confirm Arsenal's victory.
"Of course, in the short term, you can compensate for being without Thierry and we created a lot of movement and danger," observed Wenger.
Arsenal therefore secured their third victory against Boro this season and their second in the past fortnight, having also beaten them 4-1 in the Premiership.
