A number of injury problems was followed by the former Tottenham man walking out on the Gunners at half-time of a Premiership game against West Ham in early February because of a problem in his private life.

However he has come back strongly in the final two months of the season and ended the campaign with Arsenal's goal in their 2-1 Champions League final defeat to Barcelona.

Campbell is now hoping to force his way into Sven-Goran Eriksson's starting line-up in the World Cup finals after featuring in the B international defeat against Belarus on Thursday.

He said: "There has been a lot of hurt over the past eight years. I have been through a lot so it has been difficult but I'm through it now.

"It's all sorted now. I'm much better, much happier and much more alive. Now I just want to play football. The World Cup is football's biggest prize and I want to play a part in it."

However his future with the Gunners remains under a cloud as he has already been linked with a switch to Turkish side Fenerbahce, while Premiership rivals Fulham have also reportedly expressed an interest.

He is due for talks with boss Arsene Wenger following the World Cup about his future, but Sunday tabloid reports claim the Gunners have told him he can leave this summer and will listen to offers for him.
