Wenger - How we'll make José feel at home
José Antonio Reyes will be in the squad for Saturday's trip to Wolves after all.
When the Spanish midfielder/striker returned home to Seville after Tuesday's Carling Cup semi-final with Middlesbrough he was suffering from an infection. But the new signing has returned to England much healthier and therefore will travel to Molineux for tomorrow's Premiership game.
The news pleased Arsenal manager Ars鑞e Wenger, who is looking to accelerate Reyes?adaptation period. However, at the same time, the Frenchman knows that patience will be a necessity.
"He had a big infection, with ulcers in his mouth," said Wenger. "When he came back after the game he was really not well.
"However Reyes returned from Spain late last night after collecting his affairs. He looks fit to play and he will travel.
"Perhaps he should not have played [on Tuesday] but at one level I am happy because it will speed up his adaptation. It was a semi-final where there was something at stake and you had to be up for it.
"It was a good view of how hard the physical challenge will be and how you are closed down. And that is why every player who comes to England becomes better - because you have to speed up."
"First you need to get them used to our style and how we want to play football," he said. "But we will know that from when we scouted the player. That is when you find out whether the player has the ingredients you want.
"The second part is to give them the confidence to integrate into the team. You need to make them welcome and get them used to England life.
"Also it is important for them to learn English. For me, you never feel comfortable if you don抰 learn the language.
"Our players have lessons. For example, with Kolo - who was injured just after he came - we gave him a lesson a day. Thierry Henry was a very quick learner as well. Fortunately, [for Reyes] we now have five or six Spanish speaking players.
"But," Wenger concluded, "the best way to integrate is to play well on the pitch."
And that will always be the same whatever the language and whatever the country.
