WENGER UNHAPPY WITH REAL
Wednesday 11th February 2004
Arsene Wenger has condemned Real Madrid for publicly confirming their interest in Thierry Henry, while the striker himself continues to pledge his loyalty to Arsenal.
Real coach Carlos Queiroz admitted he would love to sign Henry and Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy, but Wenger did not take too kindly to the comments.
"If I want a player from Real Madrid, I would call Real Madrid first - I would not come out in the newspapers first," blasted Wenger.
"It is unfair to his [Queiroz] own players, it is unfair to Arsenal and you would expect a bit more class."
Henry spoke to the Spanish press last month and confirmed his intention to remain with Arsenal, but Queiroz's quotes have again stoked the fires of speculation.
However, Henry - who grabbed his 100th Premiership goal in the 2-0 victory over Southampton at Highbury on Tuesday evening - remains resolute on the issue of his future.
"I'm staying at Arsenal. I'm happy here, full stop," he said.
"I have said it so many times that I am getting bored now.
"What else can I say? What else can I show? I am happy at Arsenal and you can see it on the pitch.
"You can see the talk doesn't bother me. You are playing for people who love you, the team is doing well and the fans are singing my name.
"When I was young that is all I wanted. As soon as the ref blows his whistle, I am the happiest man in the world.
"In a way, it is a compliment and it is nice to hear people talk about you all the time. But I have made it clear so many times I am happy at Arsenal."
