Aliadiere's late, late show is pleasing sight for Wenger.
22-03-04
Two late goals form Jeremie Aliadiere sealed a fantastic 4-0 win for the reserves against Derby County . Earlier strikes from Michal Papadopulos and Olafur Ingi Skulason had given The Gunners a 2-0 lead going into the final minute, but Aliadiere's goals made the scoreline a much fairer reflection of a game which Arsenal dominated throughout. The Frenchman worked hard alongside Papadopulos and David Bentley, and could well have scored 4 or 5, as he looks to find full fitness, and help Arsenal in their bid for all three trophies.
Arsenal fielded a strong XI, including Rami Shaaban, Justin Hoyte and the exciting front three of Aliadiere, Bentley and Papadopulos, whilst young centre back Frankie Simek again captained the side. Meanwhile, Patrick Cregg and Stephen Bradley were given the chance to shine in the middle with the absence of Cesc Fabregas.
Arsenal were in control of the match right from the kick off, and it wasn't long before they had their first goal scoring opportunity. A long ball forward caused confusion between the Derby defence and keeper Liam Richardson, and the sharp Aliadiere stole in to whisk the ball away. However, his first touch took him wide, and he fired over from a tight angle. A minute later, Papadopulos showed good strength to hold off his marker and feed the ball towards Aliadiere, but this time, the keeper reached the ball in time. The front two were beginning to really gel, with the arial ability of Papadopulos and pace of Aliadiere proving a major threat.
After seven minutes, Derby had their first chance of the game. A hopeful ball forward found Kyle Macaulay, but Rami Shaaban reacted quickest and slid in to gather the ball. Shaaban was again called in to action soon after, when a jinking run by Chris Palmer brought a fine low save from the agile keeper. After breaking his leg last season, Shaaban has yet to play for the first team, and will now look to reach the levels that saw him perform superbly in the North London derby, and our 3-1 win against Roma last term.
Despite these early scares, The Gunners soon turned their possession into goals. A good run by Aliadiere saw him pick out David Bentley, who laid a perfectly weighted pass into Papadopulos. The big Czech had looked lively so far, and made no mistake, drilling a low shot past Richardson . Papadopulos is only on loan, but in recent weeks has looked very good value for a permanent deal.
Arsenal's front three continued to cause Derby problems, with Aliadiere looking particularly dangerous. However, it was dynamic right back Justin Hoyte who was to set up the next major opportunity. His 40-yard diagonal pass picked out Papadopulos, who headed just over the bar. As the home team looked to increase their lead, Aliadiere fired a shot right at Richardson , and soon had another dipping effort brilliantly saved by the Derby Keeper. It stayed at 1-0 until the break, and as Arsenal headed back to the dressing room, they would have considered themselves unfortunate not to be further ahead.
After an exciting first period, the second was more scrappy, as derby tried to force they way back into the game, with little success. Summer signing Junior was thrown on after an hour, as the big Brazilian looks to gain fitness after breaking his leg in September. However, the service to the Derby front men was disappointing and they were left to feed off scraps for the remainder of the game.
Arsenal aimed to keep it tight at the back, whilst trying to hit their opponents on the break with the pace and skill of Aliadiere and Bentley. Stephen Bradley fed Aliadiere through the middle, but the Frenchman was thwarted yet again by Richardson, who rushed out to smother the ball. It ran loose to Papadopulos, but his excellent chip was headed away by back peddling captain Pablo Mills.
Pressure finally told on 69 minutes when Arsenal were gifted a second goal. Bentley swung in a corner from the left, and it looked comfortable for Richardson . However, the big Rams keeper, who had performed admirably up until this point, fumbled the ball and pushed it straight towards Ollie Skulason, who headed home with ease. The goal was no more then Arsenal deserved, as the Gunners began to put some distance between themselves and Derby .
As the second half progressed, Derby found it increasingly difficult to create any clear cut opportunities. They often worked the ball well, but let themselves down on the final ball, with a number of crosses and long balls easily gobbled up by the impressive Shaaban. Arsenal took off Papadopulos, who had performed well and worked tirelessly, his first goal after 15 minutes no more than he deserved. Last week's two-goal hero Adam Birchall replaced him up front.
The game appeared to be fizzling out when Aliadiere made his impact and finally beat the Derby keeper. In the 89th minute, he raced onto a loose pass and coolly slotted home from the left hand side of the box. The French striker wheeled away and punched the air in delight. Considering his usually ice-cool demeanor, it was clear just how relieved he was to finally get the goal his hard work had surely warranted. However, it was apparent that he was not content with just the one goal, as he hunted for another in stoppage time. A minute later, he picked up the ball just outside the area, and after a neat turn, shot from the same position that had brought him his first. This time, the hapless Derby keeper got a hand to the ball, but the curl of the shot was enough to give Aliadiere his second and Arsenal's forth.
In the end, although Derby performed solidly in patches, they were unable to stop a determined Arsenal side who deserved their four-goal win. It could have been far worse for the visitors, who were lucky to see Aliadiere frustrated on a number of occasions before his late double.
