IMMORAL TO STOP PENNANT PLAYING - WENGER
Friday 16 April 2004
Arsene Wenger will be happy to see Jermaine Pennant lining up for Leeds against Arsenal at Highbury tonight - because he believes it would be "immoral" to try and stop him playing.
Pennant is on loan at Elland Road from Arsenal until the end of the season and Wenger believes it is only right that players in such circumstances are allowed to play - even if they come back to haunt their real employers.
"I don't have any concerns about him playing against us," said Wenger.
"Legally it's not defendable because you are registered for the club. If the guy qualifies for the club, what right legally have you got to stop him from playing?
"It's completely immoral. He doesn't play for you because you think he will not be in the team, then you want him to gain experience, but only when it is detrimental to the other teams, not to you. And then when he has got all the experience you want him back?
"In my opinion, especially recently, he has done extremely well. All the reports have been very good. He should be back next season and we want him, if he accepts that he has to fight for his position."
