Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is planning the transfer swoop of the summer by bringing David Beckham to Highbury. The England captain's personal problems have been well documented recently and his desire to reunite his family means he'll move back to England after just one season in Spain. It's apparent his wife and family won't move to Madrid, and with his Hertfordshire mansion just minutes away from Arsenal's training ground it would be a convenient move.
Arsenal have been scouting right sided players all season and it's believed that Freddie Ljungberg could be used as part of the deal to bring Beckham to Highbury. Ljungberg emerged as a Madrid target during the January transfer window, but played down speculation about his Arsenal future at that stage. However, we're told that he would be keen on a move to Madrid, especially as the Spanish champions are set to lose Luis Figo in the summer as well. Arsenal are also set to lose Sylvain Wiltord on a free transfer while Jermaine Pennant is available to interested clubs, including Birmingham and Charlton.
No fee has been mentioned yet, but Arsenal believe they can do business with Madrid for less than £10m with Ljungberg used as part of the deal.
Chelsea are also interested in Beckham and although his representatives have spoken to both the London clubs, the proliferation of midfielders at Stamford Bridge means Arsenal is his first choice.
