The answer to all these is, in my opinion, 'No'. Yet the respect in which he is now held stems largely from his ability to say No. No , that is, to alcohol. Just as Paul Merson did before him Tony Adams made the decision to stop drinking and it was a decision that changed his life dramatically.
Once so famously jailed for a drink driving offence, Tony Adams always had a reputation as someone who liked the occasional half of bitter shandy. Almost immediately the fire extinguisher episode in a Romford pizza establishment with Ray Parlour or the twenty odd stitches he needed having fallen down the steps of a nightclub in the week before the FA Cup Quarter Final against Ipswich. The drinking culture, so prevalent amongst members of his profession must have been hard for him to avoid; even with someone of his fortitude. Like others before him drinking became an easy solution to so much spare time and money.
It was a positively Baker, Gascoigne, Evans type bender in the three days following the traumatic Euro '96 semi final exit that finally persuaded Adams to take control of his personal demons. As I remember the story broke in the News of the World and interviews at that time revealed a haggard, unshaven and confused and frankly confused man.
His subsequent period of recovery, again like his great friend Merse, has been publicly and excessively documented and as is typical of the man he did not attempt to shy away from it. As he slowly recovered so he changed and no more was this better highlighted than through his relationship with the media.
The simple truth was that Adams had finally rediscovered a life out of football and it had transformed him.
With his personal demons well in check Adams returned to the side but worryingly his customary level of excellence had slipped. The Blackburn game confirmed the growing fears and as Arsenal slumped to a 3-1 defeat, having been 1-0 up, questions were being asked about his fitness. He clearly thought the same and after one of his worst performances in the captain's armband he went to see Wenger to say that he didn't think he could carry on and that his performances didn't merit a place.
Wenger, perhaps mindful of his over powering influence on the side, decided to send Adams away and give him as much time as he needed to recover from his various ailments. The reality is that he hadn't been fully fit since about the February of 1996 and rest was exactly what the doctor ordered. He was also sent to a French clinic to complete his recovery and he returned to the side rejuvenated. Since then, as is fitting, he improved as the season reached its climax. As the team embarked on the run of ten wins it was Adams who effortlessly underpinned this effort. Petit and Vieira may have taken many of the plaudits but the captain's influence was crucial.
No longer George Graham's trusty lieutenant, Adams has matured on the pitch to complement his off field changes. The rantings and screaming have been replaced with a calmer more measured approach, reflecting his experience and know how. And to add to this he's even started to "play a bit".
The moment that encapsulates this was the goal he scored against Everton on the Championship winning afternoon. A delicate chip from Steve Bould of all people saw Adams (just like Mickey) charging through the midfield. The chest down dropped a touch awkwardly for him but the instinctive and immediate left foot volley was dispatched with unerring accuracy and it beat the flailing Myhre with ease. Martin Tyler's crescendo like commentary "It's Adams ... WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT!" so aptly describes a wonderful moment.
Of the few acres of rain forest I collected and lovingly saved in the few days after my favourite picture was on the front of the Independent's sports section which shows a picture of Adams, back to the camera, arms outstretched with the headline Arsenal in Highbury heaven. A very special moment in Arsenal history from a Highbury hero.
With over fifty caps for England, Adams was a key figure in Hoddle's famous "spine" and although he was at fault for Romania's first goal his performances in general were excellent. Barry Davies throw away line that Adams was captaining well during the Tunisia game was showed that you don't need an armband to lead a team. Admittedly it does help and Glenn's decision to go with Shearer, a man not even captain of his club side was certainly mystifying. This of course may have had something to do with Glenn worrying about Adams' long term future but surely he would have made a more effective choice.
This is pure speculation but it can hardly have surprised anyone that he, not Shearer, was the first to speak to Beckham saying "Don't worry Becks, I still love you". The strange thing is though that it sounds so Tony Adams now, when a couple of years ago a comment like that would have lead to questions about his sexual tendencies!
Tony Adams is an inspiration to all he plays with and to most he comes into contact with. People are frequently lost for words when they talk about him and phrases like "What can you say?" pop up with frightening regularity. I, for one, am simply proud to watch him play for Arsenal. He has won nine trophies, eight as captain - a true all time Arsenal great and I doubt I'll see many players have the impact he has had.
Someone once said "he plays the game as if it is a matter of life and death all the time knowing that of course it is not" an unerringly accurate description. When you consider what he has been through it is amazing that he still does.
