04/30/2004. Arsene Wenger has come out in support of under-fire keeper Jens Lehmann and insisted the German will continue as the clubs first choice next season.
Lehmann has been criticised throughout the season for his rash behaviour, which culminated in giving away a penalty to hand Tottenham a last minute equaliser at White Hart Lane last weekend.
However, reports that Wenger is looking to replace the former Borussia Dortmund star appear to be well off the mark.
He told the Evening Standard: "He is my number one, 100%. He has had an outstanding championship. I am not looking for another goalkeeper.
"Jens has shown remarkable consistency and I cannot think of any mistakes he has made in Premiership games."
He continued: "He is one of the few goalkeepers who comes for crosses.
"Other players know he doesn't master his reactions well enough. They don't go for the ball - they play to provoke him. But he knows that as well as I do.
"He will be better next season. For me, he has had an outstanding season and even at Tottenham his goalkeeping was faultless. He doesn't get the credit he deserves."
