Michael Carrick's future is still far from resolved, with Tottenham now believed to have joined the race for his signature.
Everton, Portsmouth and Crystal Palace have all agreed deals with West Ham for the England midfielder, but as yet he has not agreed terms with any of those clubs.
Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion also expressed an interest, but both have pulled out of the race.
The Baggies admitted defeat after Carrick stated he was not prepared to quit Upton Park for The Hawthorns.
"I've spoken to his agent and the lad just didn't fancy it, basically," said West Brom boss Gary Megson.
"We're disappointed, but that's the end of our interest in the matter. We've got other irons in the fire and we'll look elsewhere."
Pompey have suggested that they could be ready to pull the plug on their proposed move - should Carrick not provide them with an answer within the next 24 hours.
Portsmouth have also stated that they are now back in the chase for Greek star Angelos Basinas - which is another indication that Carrick will not be moving to Fratton Park.
So three clubs now remain in the hunt for Carrick - with a move to Palace looking highly unlikely after a previous move to Selhurst Park was rejected by the Geordie earlier this summer.
Everton have confirmed their interest and new investment at Goodison Park looks like providing the income needed to pay for Carrick.
Tottenham have not yet officially expressed their interest, but are now thought to be gearing up for a move for the 23-year-old.
Dean Richards had been mentioned as a possible make-weight in a deal for Carrick, but this has already been rubbished by his agent.
