Robert Pires: ‘My second goal was typical Arsenal’

Robert Pires has hailed Arsenal’s performance against Aston Villa on Saturday.
The French midfielder scored the first and third goals in a rousing 3-1 victory over David O’Leary’s side. Lee Hendrie put Villa ahead after three minutes but Arsenal levelled after 19 minutes when Pires scored from a penalty. Thierry Henry fired Arsenal in front on the stroke of half-time and then set-up his compatriot for the all-important third with 19 minutes left.
“It was a treat to play,” he said. “Everybody played well and it was especially pleasing after we conceded a goal so early.”
There was some surprise when Henry did not step up to take the spot kick after Mark Delaney had brought him down.
“Thierry is the No 1,” explained Pires. “But when he has been fouled he has taken the decision not to take the penalty. I am the No 2 so I took it.
“My second goal was typical Arsenal – to the left, to the right then centre. It was a collective action and very fluid.”
