...on the overall performance “I am very proud. It was a positive night for us. We had an Under-21 side out, including three 17 year-olds. In some circumstances we lacked a little bit of maturity on the ball and sometimes in possession but then we were tactically very good. In the first half we were patient and in the second we finished the job as we knew we could. Van Persie's goal was a real Arsenal goal."

...on the wealth of talent coming through “It makes me convinced this club has a future. But it is a consequence of five hard years of work with our Academy and our scouts. We have concentrated on that for a few years and now you have started to see that the quality is coming out. The next generation looks very good.

"In midfield we had Flamini, 20, Fabregas, 17, Smith, 17, Pennant, 21. Up front there was Lupoli, 17, and Van Persie who is just 21. It was a very young team to play at this level."

...on Pascal Cygan "You are always apprehensive before a game like that. If it does not go well in the first 20 minutes it could always be four or five. Pascal Cygan was a great example. We needed his experience to get through the bad part of the game. If we had not had him we would not have won."

...on their progress in the Carling Cup “City had an experienced side out but our team was very, very young so it was a good test. As much as I can, I will keep faith with these players throughout the competition."

...on the youngsters' first-team chances “For me there are seven or eight who could step up, and remember we were missing Gael Clichy. Not all at the same time but they all could play. For example Philippe Senderos played his first game tonight and you could see how strong he was."
