Flamini plays himself into contention

It seems that Mathieu Flamini may have played himself into first-team contention at just the right time.

Recent injuries to Edu and Gilberto have stretched Arsène Wenger’s resources in central midfield. Of course there is still Patrick Vieira while the meteoric rise of Francesc Fabregas has been well-documented.

But after two impressive performances in the Carling Cup, Flamini - a summer signing from Marseille - is rapidly looking ready to step up. He is in the squad for tomorrow’s trip to Tottenham and Wenger hinted today we may see him some time in the next few games.

“I feel Flamini is making quick progress,” said Wenger. “He looks to be becoming a serious candidate now. He is strong in the tackle and very mobile. You could forget he is only 20 when you see him play. I don’t know yet [if he will feature against Tottenham] but he is in the squad.

"And we should not forget that Cesc is only 17.  He could play tomorrow, then on Tuesday for the Under-21s, again on Saturday against West Brom and then in the Champions League. At some stage I will have to rest him."

Wenger’s first-team injury list lengthened by one on Tuesday after Edu broke a bone in his toe. He will be sidelined until the end of December along with his compatriot Gilberto, who has a vertebrae injury.

Sol Campbell is out with a calf problem and Wenger said today that he will miss the West Brom game and the trip to PSV Eindhoven at least.

Finally, Gael Clichy is still recovering from an ankle injury picked up on international duty.

本周二，温格的一队伤员名单上又增加了脚趾骨折的埃杜。在这份名单上，还包括他的同胞，椎骨受伤的吉尔伯托。而埃杜将至少缺阵到12月底。

温格今天表示，索尔・坎贝尔因为小腿有伤，将至少缺席同托特纳姆和西布朗姆维奇的两场英超联赛，以及冠军联赛客场挑战PSV埃因霍恩的比赛。

另外，盖尔・克里希在U21国家队比赛中脚踝受伤后，仍处于康复期。
