MATCH REPORTS - Arsenal's impressive Carling Cup run was ended at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, as a typically young side were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United. David Bellion scored the winner for the home side after just twenty seconds and the young visitors found it difficult to threaten any kind of a comeback. Here is how the players rated: Manuel Almunia: Made a mistake early on which caused his team to concede. A low shot was directed right in his path and all he had to do was gather but he mistimed his catch and the ball ended up going in. Played well afterwards saving from Richardson and generally doing well. 6. Justin Hoyte: A solid match. Did well in defence and made a few good challenges and clearances. Didn't get forward as often as he would have liked but all in all a good performance. 7. Johan Djourou: A very nervous match compared to his last outing against Everton. His slip ended up being the main catalyst for the goal. Got his confidence back but never really recovered from that early setback. 5 Philippe Senderos: A dominant performance by the Swiss centre back. Very comfortable on the ball and was a big presence in defence. He was a giant amongst men. He got his head on every ball that came at him and got a knock for it late on. Made countless challenges and was very composed on the ball. Man of the match for me. 8. Gaël Clichy: Provided this youthful team with experience and it showed. He made numerous challenges and poured forward as often as possible. Very good performance after coming back from injury. 8. Jermaine Pennant: Provided width and attacking options. Tracked back well and used his blistering pace to run at Fortune. He did well. 7. Mathieu Flamini: Showed grit and determination throughout and had a solid match. Defended well and got forward when needed. His tackling was superb and he never gave Djemba Djemba any respite. 7. Sebastian Larsson: Not his best performance in this competition but he got stuck in and made life hard for Kleberson. 6. Quincy Owusu Abeyie: His worst match of the campaign so far. Did his tricks early on but as the game wore on he disappeared. Tried his best but things just weren't coming of for him unfortunately. 6. Arturo Lupoli: Was isolated up front for long periods of the game. Tried his best but could not get the necessary support from his midfield. He did not get any scarps to feed off from. 6. Robin van Persie: Showed glimpses of magic like his ball to Quincy midway through the second half but disappointed overall. Was too busy trying to help out defensively. He was lucky not to get sent off after numerous warnings. Not one of his best games. 6. Ryan Smith (on for Lupoli): Did not get much of the ball. Showed a bit of trickery but did not have enough time to impress. 6 Daniel Karbassiyoon (on for Clichy): Defended well when called upon but did not do much. 6 Patrick Cregg (on for Larsson): He was on very late. Did not make any real impact on the game. 6. The kids deserve credit for getting as far as they did and a good few of them can hope for some action in the first team sometime soon judging from their displays in this competition.
