Pires committed to Les Bleus
Friday September 10 2004
Robert Pires insists he is fully committed to the French national team and says he has no intention of calling time on his international career.
The Arsenal winger was appalled by the recent criticism from new France coach Raymond Domenech following his side's 1-1 draw to Bosnia Herzegovina in a friendly last month.
The 31-year-old expressed his unhappiness at being benched for the Bosnia game and Les Bleus' opening World Cup qualifier against Israel on Saturday, which also ended 1-1, but he played the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 win over the Faroe Islands in midweek.
The Gunners midfielder may not agree with all of Domenech's decisions, but he says there is no way he is about to turn his back on his country.
"It is out of question to leave the French team," Pires told L'Equipe.
"I am very committed to the French team. It is crucial to me and it is out of question I will stop or people would make me stop.
"Like a lot of my team-mates, I was very shocked by lies I read and heard. I was shocked to read the coach wanted to replace me after just ten minutes. I was shocked people could think I'd fake injury.
"I spent four years with coach Raymond Domenech with Under-21 team. I think he knows how I behave. He knows I have always respected the decisions as a coach."
