Arsene Wenger has confirmed he will not resurrect his interest in Ajax defender Hatem Trabelsi.
The Arsenal manager is keen to recruit a new defender before the close of the transfer window on August 31.
Tunisian international Trabelsi has long been linked with a switch to Highbury and a deal appeared to be on the cards earlier in the summer.
But the move collapsed and Wenger has acknowledged he will not be attempting to prise the full back away from the Amsterdam ArenA this month.
"We are looking at signing a new defender before the end of the month but the Trabelsi situation is dead," said Wenger.
Meanwhile, Gunners midfielder Robert Pires is confident the club could have coped if compatriot Patrick Vieira had signed for Real Madrid.
The Arsenal captain rejected a move to the Spanish capital last week but Pires feels the young talent at Highbury would have compensated for Vieira's exit.
"When you see what Cesc Fabregas has done at only 17, it's mind-blowing," said Pires.
"Robin van Persie is a very good one who can play anywhere in attack. Jermaine Pennant and Gael Clichy were both excellent in the Community Shield too. And then there is Jose Reyes.
"These youngsters fear nothing, they are really impressive. I didn't do half what they do at their age.
"It goes without saying we would not have been happy to see Patrick go.
"But I assure you that our personal bond with the club - and I'm speaking of the other Frenchman in the squad - would not have been affected."
