COLE TO SNUB ARSENAL DEAL ASHLEY COLE will refuse to sign a new deal with Arsenal even if they meet Chelsea's staggering £90,000-a-week offer.
The England left-back is at the centre of a massive tug-of-war between the two London rivals after the alleged meeting with Jose Mourinho and Peter Kenyon. But even when the Premier League inquiry comes to an end, Cole is ready to snub talks with the Gunners over signing a new contract, after accusing the Highbury outfit of reneging on their initial offer.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will plead with the Highbury board to come up with a package that can tempt Cole - who has two years left on his current deal - to commit his future to the club, even if that means tearing up their rigid wages policy. Yet sources close to Cole insisted last night that the 24-year-old had shaken hands on a verbal deal with Arsenal before Christmas that would have more than doubled his current £27,000-per-week terms.
When the contract offer was finally delivered on paper from vice-chairman David Dein, the terms were worth £5,000 a week less than Cole believed he had been promised. And last night, a close friend claimed that Cole was so angry at the offer from Dein that he was in no mood to re-commit himself.
The friend said: "If Ashley had been presented with a new deal four weeks ago, he would have signed it. He's unhappy about the way he's been treated. He is very disillusioned."
Cole's rift with Arsenal comes as the Highbury club have been trying to portray the player as the innocent party.
Arsenal's anger has been directed at Cole's agent, Jonathan Barnett, and Chelsea, with the Gunners wanting to let the investigation run its course.
Highbury insiders say there is a "huge credibility gap" between the protestations of innocence and the facts that have emerged about the alleged meeting on January 27.
Yet the worry for Wenger must now be that even if he can persuade the board to change tack, it may be too late to prevent Cole abandoning ship and heading for Stamford Bridge.
