Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires has blasted the Chelsea duo of Marcel Desailly and Claude Makelele for their on-pitch behaviour in Monaco.

The Frenchman was not pleased with the pair's actions in their 3-1 UEFA Champions League semi-final, first leg defeat at Stade Louis II last Tuesday.
Makelele looked to have feigned injury after Monaco's Andreas Zikos was sent off for lashing out at the former Real Madrid man.

Desailly, meanwhile, received a three-match ban from Uefa this week for elbowing Monaco's on-loan striker Fernando Morientes in the head.

Pires thinks these actions should not be part of football and that the Chelsea duo have given the game a bad image.

"I've heard players say this kind of thing is all part of the game, but I don't agree," said Pires.

"I am sorry to see the players showing these two bad images and surprised they should act in this way. It is not good for football.

Despite not being impressed with their actions, Pires gave his backing to Desailly in the race scandal surrounding former football TV pundit Ron Atkinson.

Atkinson resigned from his post at ITV Sport and his weekly newspaper column with The Guardian after making a racist remark about the central defender on air following Chelsea's defeat in Monaco.

"It is deplorable that anyone should use words like that about a player," added Pires.
