Exclusive: Dutch flourish

Owusu-Abeyie on how Arsenal came to his rescue after Ajax rejection.
So much for Arsene Wenger's fabled scouting network. When Quincy Owusu-Abeyie completed his third stepover before dumping a bemused Tony Hibbert on his back against Everton on Tuesday night, sage pundits shook their heads.
Like Kolo Toure and Jose Reyes before him, Wenger had plucked another youngster from obscurity, they reckoned.
But it seems for once Wenger's connections had nothing to do with it. It seems he simply answered his telephone when the former-Ajax youth star came calling - after every other club in Holland had turned him down.
"I was at Ajax for nine years and it wasn't going well for me," Owusu-Abeyie told High&I Sport.
"I was having problems with the managers and I wasn't playing enough, so my agent tried to get clubs for me.
"It was really hard for me to get a club in Holland because no-one else wanted to give me a chance because of the problems I had.
"Arsenal was the only club that gave me an opportunity and it was my only chance."
How Ajax - and every other club in Holland - must be ruing that decision after the 18-year-old scored one and set up two against the Toffees in a breathtaking performance.
Of course, regulars around Highbury will have heard talk about the youngster since he signed in the summer of 2002. With his gold boots and dazzling feet, he is hardly the type to keep a low profile.
He made an immediate impact when he scored six times in one game for the Under-17s and is anything but the retiring type on the pitch.
"I always learned that you should try and be really confident," he said. "If you get nervous on your first touch then you won't finish the game properly."
There was never any danger he would retreat into his shell, and if anything, Wenger's battle has been reining in the tricks and flicks he learned playing football in Holland.
"In Amsterdam I learned to play street football which is where I learned my skills," he said.
"I try and do the same thing on the pitch, but not too much. I want to keep it simple and play the right ball - but if you can do a trick and go past the player then do it: go past a man and then look for a man in a better position.
"If you do tricks it's more entertaining, but you want to win the game.
"So do the trick, but make sure there's an end product."
He learned his first skills playing with his dad in Amsterdam. Owusu-Abeyie senior used to take him to the local park where he would teach him the "stuff" that make him stand out now.
At seven he was picked up by Ajax, but even if that seems a long time ago now, he doesn't need to look far for a new mentor.
Dennis Bergkamp, at Highbury now for a decade, is another Ajax export who has managed to hone his individual skills to suit the team and Owusu-Abeyie has been studying him at close quarters on the training ground.
"I always looked up to him and now I learn from him in training," he said. "You watch how he moves, how he plays, and how he keeps it simple. You try and learn from that because he is the Dutch Master."
Just like Bergkamp, Holland's loss could be Arsenal's gain.
Club"
